About The Project
Project Details
The overall objective of this project is to carry out an integrated evaluation of the benefits and drawbacks derived from the use of regenerated wastewater for agricultural irrigation. The
evaluation will be carried out in terms of propagation of biological and chemical contaminants of water in soil, plants and humans. The present project will apply in irrigation reclaimed
water obtained with different treatments to three type of crops (carrot, lettuce and tomato). Its evaluation will allow to relate the technologies of water reclamaition with its impact and risk for the consumption of the horticultural products obtained. The chemical contaminants present in the irrigation water will be evaluated and their level of ecotoxicity determined (by estimating the hazard ratios, HQ). The levels present in the produced vegetables will also be evaluated to estimate the food security derived from their consumption (through the calculation of the estimated daily intake, EDI).This will be related with the soil and water contents of pollutants, thus assessing the bioavailability when possible. Due to its environmental importance and impact on the consumer, the evaluation of pesticides and their processing products, both in water and in foods produced according to European Regulations and Directives 2009/128 / EC, 2006/125 / EC, 2006 / 125 / EC, 213/39 / EC shall be comprehensive. Thus, it will be possible to estimate the potential use or limitations of the reuse processes in the production of vegetal foods. Even those of special significance as they are; Baby food or organic products. The integration of all the results achieved will be the basis for establishing the first regulatory recommendations on acceptable levels of the chemical and microbiological quality parameters of treated wastewater for use in agricultural irrigation.
